Known also as Arg-e Alishah, it is the remnant of a 14th-century Ilkhanate-era complex planned as a grand vaulted mosque, prayer halls, library, courtyard with reflecting pool, and mausoleum, surrounded by walls. Its massive vault was intended to surpass the Taq Kisra. Construction from 1318-1339 halted after the main barrel vault collapsed. In the 19th century, amid Russo-Persian Wars, it became a military fort with added barracks, headquarters, and cannon foundry. Military elements were later removed, turning the site into a park with a nearby mosque.
