Kotamobagu City resulted from the division of Bolaang Mongondow Regency to advance the region, build public welfare, facilitate services, and mobilize development for the prosperity of the Totabuan people. Bolaang Village lies on the northern coast, serving as the king's palace site from the 17th to late 19th century, while Mongondow Village is about 2 km south. 'Bolaang' derives from 'bolango' or 'balangon,' meaning sea, or becoming bright and open. 'Mongondow' comes from 'momondow,' a shout signaling victory.
