Description

Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, China, conceals a submerged ancient city. A research team from the Association of Chinese Cultural Studies and Yunnan University conducted a 20-day dive off the eastern shore, 60 km southeast of Kunming, from September 26 to October 15. They mapped the site, photographed carved stones resembling yijing trigrams, sun, moon, and genitalia depictions, and recovered 42 handmade stone artifacts. The 2.5 square kilometer underwater area includes 30 buildings, walls, and cobblestone roads, with only two examined. Previous CCTV expeditions in 2001 and 2006 sparked comparisons to China's Pompeii or Atlantis. Professor Huang Yilu of Yunnan University noted the ongoing mystery of these ruins.
