Description

In this installment of my Indonesia travel series, I fly from Jakarta to Semarang, a coastal city in Central Java. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by its charm. I start at Lawang Sewu, the historic Dutch East Indies railway station known as the 'Thousand Doors' building. Across the road is Tugu Muda, a large stone monument commemorating Semarang's fight against the Japanese in WWII. Next, vibrant Kampung Pelangi, a hillside settlement painted in bright colors. Then, Sam Po Kong, the oldest Chinese temple complex filled with statues, temples, and a traditional band. Finally, the magnificent Central Java Grand Mosque. A great visit overall!
