The city is situated in the center of the country, at the transition between temperate steppe and dry steppe (dry pampa and humid pampa). Founded on April 22, 1892, as Santa Rosa del Toay, it became capital of the National Territory of La Pampa (1900-1951), Eva Perón Province (1951-1956), and La Pampa Province (1956-present). Located on the western edge of the pampean plain, it occupies a centripetal basin draining to Laguna Don Tomás, with undulating terrain rising to 200m in the east.
